Prioritize product features using the RICE framework. Score Reach, Impact, Confidence, and Effort to decide what delivers the highest value.

What is the RICE Prioritization Model?

RICE is a popular product prioritization framework created by Intercom. It helps product managers, startups, and SaaS teams evaluate opportunities objectively by considering potential reach, expected impact, confidence in estimates, and the effort required to deliver the work.

RICE Score = (Reach × Impact × Confidence) ÷ Effort

Each initiative is scored using four factors:

  • Reach — how many users will be affected
  • Impact — how much value it creates for each user
  • Confidence — how certain you are about the estimates
  • Effort — total implementation cost or team time required

Compared to simpler frameworks like ICE, RICE provides more structure by accounting for audience size and implementation effort. This makes it especially useful for scaling SaaS products and data-driven product teams.

When Should You Use RICE?

RICE works best when your team has access to user data, analytics, or reasonable estimates about feature adoption. It is commonly used for:

  • Feature prioritization
  • Product roadmap planning
  • Growth experiments
  • Customer-request evaluation
  • SaaS product management

RICE vs ICE

Both frameworks help prioritize ideas, but they are designed for different situations.

Everything you need to know about RICE prioritization.

RICE is a prioritization framework that evaluates ideas using Reach, Impact, Confidence, and Effort.

RICE Score = (Reach × Impact × Confidence) ÷ Effort.

Reach estimates how many users will be affected by a feature or initiative during a given time period.

Impact measures how much value each affected user receives from the feature.

Confidence reflects how certain you are about your Reach and Impact estimates.

Effort represents the amount of work required, often measured in person-months or team weeks.

Use RICE when you have user data or reliable estimates. ICE is better for quick prioritization when data is limited.
